Got questions? We have answers.

We’ve answered the most common questions so you can head into your written test with confidence.

Do I have to pass the Knowledge (written) Test before I can take the Skills (driving) Test?

Yes. This is state law.

You must bring your License eXpress username and password, as well as photo ID that includes your name and date of birth. This can be:

  • WA State ID or photo permit
  • School ID + non-photo permit
  • Passport or birth certificate with a parent’s ID

Review full list of accepted documents for proof of identity.

Study the Washington Driver Guide—it covers everything on the test. While everything in this guide is important, we would recommend focusing on traffic signs, road rules, safety laws, and signal meanings.

In compliance with state law, yes, a proctor will be nearby to assist if needed—but they won’t hover or pressure you.

We offer audio-assisted versions in 13 languages. Visit the list.

The test has 40 multiple-choice questions. You’ll need to answer at least 32 correctly to pass with an 80% or better.

Absolutely. We believe in second chances! You can retake the test the same day (if time allows), or whenever you’re ready. No pressure.

Yes—it’s the official Washington State Knowledge Test, offered by a DOL-licensed provider.

Payment is due at the time of service (cash and credit cards).

Most students finish in 30–40 minutes. The test is not timed, so take the time you need to feel confident

We’ll submit your test score electronically to the DOL as soon as you pass. However, you’ll still need to apply for your permit directly through the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL). Here’s how:

  1. Pre-apply online at dol.wa.gov if you haven’t already. This creates your DOL ID number.
  2. Visit a DOL licensing office in person to show your ID and complete the application.
  3. If you’re under 18, bring a parent or guardian to sign your application, and make sure you’re either enrolled in driver’s ed or over age of 15½.
  4. Once approved, the DOL will issue your permit.

Not exactly. The type of permit you receive depends on how you apply:

  • If you go in person to the DOL to apply, you’ll get a photo permit
  • If you apply online, you’ll receive a non-photo permit by mail

We recommend a photo permit. Both types are valid for driver’s ed and practice driving, but photo permits are generally preferred—they’re easier to use as ID and eliminate the need to carry an additional photo ID while driving.

If you’re using a non-photo permit, you must carry a separate, government issued photo ID that clearly shows your legal name (pictures and photocopies of this ID are not valid for identification). Acceptable options include:

  • School ID with your full, legal name and photo
  • State-issued ID card
  • Passport
  • Tribal ID
  • Military ID (for dependents or active duty)

The DOL and driving instructors need to match your face to your permit details—so if your school ID doesn’t include your full, legal name, it may not be accepted.
